Old Soldiers Cemetery Cleanup

While the cleanup project occurred on Saturday, April 16, Gary Noland, has helped to keep the cemetery clean for the past 15 years. See Richmond Register story for quotes

Cutting and hauling brush wasn't the only task - often it required a team effort to pull out brush.

After brush was cut it was then piled.

One of the jobs was to deliver cold water, provided by the Kiwanis Club, to hard workers.

Often moving large limbs required a team effort

Not surprisingly, many military gravestones were found in the Old Soldiers Cemetery. Many were members of the USCI - the United States Colored Infantry.

The boys and girls had a sense of accomplishment as they uncovered gravestones that were totally obscured by brush and dead leaves.

One of the newer gravestones was of Thomas Harris who was born in 1822 and died in 1899. He served as a private in Company B, 114 Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry.

Teamwork was required on most projects in the cemetery.
